I’m not religious in any way, but I do believe there is a greater something out there playing a part in how things work out. This week “Man plans, God laughs” has never felt more relevant. Before we listed our house we knew there was a very slim window to find a new house to make the transition as easy as possible. The dream would have been to move out of KC, make the drive across the country, and slide right on into that new house. We are still hunting and watching for more options as they pop on the market but that narrow window has passed. Mentally we are getting ready for plan B.
We are fortunate that in my mom’s condo there is a studio available to rent for guests. After we make the drive across the country, our stuff will go into storage, and we will call that studio home for as long as we need! It will be a little…tight but we are lucky we have a place to go and we won’t be homeless. Once we get there it will be much easier to search for homes in person. Plus the sale of our KC home will be done by then allowing us to move quickly when we do find the right house.
I have to say, as stressful and intense as it is to go through all of these big life events at once I feel pretty okay. I’m grounded in the belief that everything really does work out how it is supposed to. Every day I am grateful that we have the ability to do all of this. Grateful that the sale of this home went as smoothly as possible, that we have the resources to make the move back to California, and that I have a strong partner, supportive family, and support to help us through each step. Everything is great and we are taking it day by day.
Anyways, I had a fun surprise this week. Tuesday afternoon I got an alert on my doorbell camera that a package had been delivered. Someone’s grocery delivery was dropped off on my doorstep by mistake.
Initially, I had no clue what to do with the delivery. I couldn’t leave it on my doorstep to see if a neighbor would come by looking for it because it was 95º outside. I thought about contacting the delivery partner but I had no way of knowing which one dropped it off. Plus, legally they can’t give you any information about the customer that placed the order or take any food back. You can return items to grocery stores and get refunded, I know this from when I worked as a family assistant and had to return groceries for clients. Unfortunately, it goes in the trash. At some places, employees will take the items home but they can not re-sell them.
With the way these apps work, I knew the person that placed the order would get a refund when they reported the mix-up. Naturally, I turned this surprise into an unboxing and made a fun video about it but I still didn’t know what to do with all the food. I am in the process of using up everything we have stock of before our move and we really didn’t need any of these groceries.
The nonperishables I took to a neighborhood pantry at the church around the corner. For the other items like meat and cheese, I surprisingly had a hard time finding someone in need that wanted them. I ended up connecting with a woman in my neighborhood who was helping a young couple get established in Kansas City. They had just purchased a home and money is tight, they don’t have family or support locally, and their food stamps don’t renew until the end of the month. She couldn’t have been more grateful and I’m thrilled this grocery mix-up ended up helping a few people in need.
Plus it added some excitement to my week. Back to packing!
What Kitchen Club subscribers made this week…
This Blueberry Almond Crumb Cake is killer and I was so excited to share the recipe!
This isn’t a recipe at all, more of a tip, but it was so tasty it’s worth sharing. I have a wonderful Goan masala from Burlap and Barrel. It’s an earthy blend of turmeric, black pepper, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves that I actually use a lot. This week I put it all over some chicken thighs and threw them on the grill. That’s it! Easy, fast, and a quick meal to keep in your back pocket.

YO! Watch this it is fascinating.
Does anyone really need a 2-pound bucket of fleur de sel? Probably not but I ordered one 🙃. I brought back a fabulous fleur de sel from Paris and I haven’t touched my thing of Maldon salt since. I use it sometimes for cooking but mainly for finishing. I’m all about the irregular size crystals and how they feel in your mouth. Now I will never run out!
Have a wonderful Sunday! Talk to you next week, Xx M
I’m glad that isn’t your cat in the fridge….no cats on the counter and no cats in the fridge!
