Well…things around here have not been going as planned. The tree trimmers had to reschedule because of rain, our electrical rewiring ended up being the whole house and not just the first floor, and they did indeed start tearing up the street to redo our neighborhood’s mainline. On top of that, I have been sick with a cold. I haven’t had a cold this bad, or any cold, since before the pandemic but let me tell you this cold hit me hard. I’m assuming because my immune system was down from just having covid? Who knows. I was knocked out for a few days and finally today I am starting to feel not sick. My grandma reminded me this week that “no one has ever died from a cold” but I have been pretty miserable.
Again I experienced a loss of taste. At some points almost completely and at other times I could taste only some savory or sweetness. This to me is completely depressing. The most joyful moments of my days are around my meals and not being able to experience them made me really sad. I found it especially frustrating when I would prepare something, like asparagus leek soup, that I was very excited about and then not be able to taste a thing.
I ended up using grocery delivery apps again, sooner than I expected. This time it was because I needed a few groceries but had a bunch of workers at my house. My feelings are the same and I don’t love them but I can’t deny how much of a lifesaver it was.
Between the construction and my cold, my cooking has been pretty minimal. I lived off matzo ball soup for three days and then pulled more soup from the freezer. My mom is in town now and I finally get to have her soup! (You’ll get to have it soon too 😉). I have been craving her soup since we got covid and although I couldn’t fully taste it, I was grateful to finally have it. Now my freezer is stocked for the next time.
Back to regularly scheduled programming next week as things start to settle back into normalcy. There are a few bonus recipes and articles for you to check out today. Enjoy!

How Do I Know Whether to Trust the Sommelier at a Restaurant?
I’m gonna keep it real…we opened this bottle when I could still taste and it was fabulous, it transported us back to Paris but the next day I got sick. When I tried to have another sip to write down detailed notes for this section I couldn’t taste a thing. So for this week just trust me when I say this is a killer natural French wine. More info, here.
These Joyce Chen kitchen sheers really are the ultimate sheers. They are small and don’t take up a lot of space in your kitchen, extremely comfortable in your hand, and sharp enough to cut through chicken bones. I used them this week for trimming tulips and cutting the backbone out of a chicken. Versatile!! They are my favorite scissors and they will become yours too.
I’m the only Peeps fan in this house!
Talk to you next week!! Xx M
Hope you are on the road to recovery
